The Gateway Chamber Orchestra is committed to connecting communities with world-class music. With that spirit in mind, GCO conductor Gregory Wolynec and a number of GCO musicians have appeared for a wide variety of community groups and centers in the Middle Tennessee community. Pre-concert talks, educational forums and arts advocacy activities are all part of our commitment to our community. If you are interested in having GCO musicians participate in your event, please contact us here.
Starting in the 2010-11 season, the Gateway Chamber Orchestra bolstered its commitment to innovative educational outreach by establishing the Gateway Concert Experience. This initiative is designed to introduce underserved rural and urban public school students to artistic musical expression at the highest level. In partnership with local school band and orchestra programs, members of the GCO visit students in the classroom the week prior to each concert. The GCO artist-teachers perform excerpts from the upcoming program for the students in an effort to familiarize them with the music. The artist-teachers also engage the students in hands-on activities to illustrate techniques employed by the composers. Those students are then given the opportunity to attend the concert with their director and parental chaperones at no charge. Through these interactive outreach presentations, the GCO has reached over 5,000 students. If you are interested in bringing a GCO program to your classroom, please contact us here.
Through the Gateway Concert Experience, the GCO is dedicated to developing new audiences through educational outreach, and engaging students in hands-on activities to develop an understanding and appreciation for a variety of musical genres and styles. In that endeavor, we are proud to provide lessons and activities that prepare students for upcoming concerts, and educate students about previously performed musical selections by exposing them to the instruments, composers, and musical selections performed by the GCO. We hope that your students and children will enjoy exploring these activities and that, through exposure to new music, they might develop a life-long participation with music and the arts.
